Listening and Reading

Voice: One.
Woman: It’s one of my grandchildren’s birthdays soon and I’m trying to
buy him a book of short stories. I’ve looked in all the bookshops in the
city but I can’t find what I’m looking for, so I’m going to try and buy the
book online. You can sometimes find really good bargains on the
internet and it’s so simple to pay. I normally use my credit card. I don’t
go shopping much these days. If you have broadband, it’s so quick and
easy to get things online.

Voice: Two.
Man 1: I sometimes surf the internet for fun, but I mainly use my computer
for sending e-mails. I have friends in different towns and cities, and I
also keep in touch with people in other countries. My best friend is
studying medicine in France – he’s very clever. He wants to be a heart
surgeon when he finishes his studies. I’m training to be an accountant.
When I start work, I’ll probably do most of my business online.

Voice: Three.
Boy: I mostly go online to listen to music. I don’t buy many CDs anymore – you can find everything you want on the internet. I’m also really keen
on sport so I often go online to find out the scores in international matches. This week, Germany beat Greece 3-1 in football.

Voice: Four.
Man 2: Well, I’m looking for a job abroad, so I’ve done some research on the internet. I’m a civil engineer and I’d like to work in another country
for a few years. I’m in contact with a Chinese company at the moment – I’d like to work for them. I’ll be head of a project building new buildings, bridges and things like that in other countries.

Louis Pasteur
He was a world-famous scientist, who was born in 1822 into an ordinary French family. When he first went to school, he was a very lazy student , but his life changed when a new and imaginative chemistry teacher arrived. From that time, he became very excited about the subject and he left school with good qualifications .
He studied in Paris and , in 1854, after doing research for a number of years, he became a professor of Chemistry at the University of Lille in northern France. Part of his work there was to help companies with their problems. For example , he showed a food company that they could kill germs in milk by boiling it and cooling it again. This made milk safe to drink.
After this, he showed that people could catch diseases from other people who were carrying germs. He also gave people an explanation as how germs can infect people. He described the three different ways: through the air , through our skin and in the food we eat.. Later, he discovered ways of preventing diseases from passing from person to person.

In 1888 , he started a special school for the study of diseases. The school took its name from his surname: it was called The Pasteur Institute.
Pasteur died in 1895 at the age of 72. Thanks to his discoveries , more people live healthy lives and fewer people die from common diseases.

Listening and Reading

Scientist: Hello. Today we’re going to ask ourselves a scientific question: Why is there always snow and ice on the summits of the highest mountains? The summit of Everest, which is nearly 9,000 metres above sea level, is the nearest place on the Earth to the sun, so why doesn’t the heat of the sun turn the snow to water? If you take a piece of ice out of your fridge at home and leave it in the sun, it turns into water in just a minute or two, so why doesn’t this happen to the snow on high mountains? Here’s the answer. The air at the bottom of mountains like Everest holds the heat of the sun. This means that the temperature is quite hot. However, at the top of mountains, there is less oxygen. This means the air is much thinner. The air here does not hold the sun’s heat so easily. So the higher you go, the less heat there is in the air, so of course the temperature gets colder and colder. Above a certain height, called the snow line, the snow never turns to water.

A simple mistake

Nadia was an …………. student and wanted to study English ……………. at university it was nearly the end of her final year at school and Nadia was starting her last piece of homework. She had missed the last English lesson because she had been ill, so she phoned her friend Azza and asked what homework they had been given .Azza said that the teacher wanted them to write an article. The title which Nadia heard her friend say was: the best things in life are three.
Nadia thought about the strange title and did not know what to write. She thought about her parents. There were only two of them. But she had for brothers and sisters. She thought about all the things that made her happy in her life. “to be …………..,” she said to herself,” there are too many to count”
During her next English lesson, Nadia‘s teacher asked her to read her article to the class. Nadia stood up and began.”I’m going to talk about the best things in life e are NOT three,” she said. At first, the other students
said nothing, then they started to laugh. It was a difficult ………….. . After a few seconds, her teacher said, “Nadia, the title of the article was ‘the best
things in life are free, not three.’

Teacher: OK. Today we’re going to do a quiz about international sport. Team A, here is your first question: Where did the Olympic Games take place in 2004?
Ali: Er, was it London ?
Teacher: No, it wasn’t. Team B, do you know the answer ?
Nadia: I think it was Athens.
Teacher: Correct! That’s one point to Team B. Now it’s Team B’s question:
How many circles are there in the Olympic Games sign?
Samy: I know that. There are definitely five circles.
Teacher: That’s right. And now Team A again: What are the five Olympic circles?
Mona: Are they Asia, Africa, Europe, the Americas and Oceania ?
Teacher: Right! You’ve scored your first point. Team B: Who won the football World Cup in 2006?
Nadia: Was it France?
Teacher: No, I’m sorry, it wasn’t. Team A, do you know?
Ali: Yes, it was Italy – they beat France in the final.
Teacher: That’s two points each. OK, Team A, this is your last question: Where did the Pan Arab Games take place in 2007?
Nadia: Cairo. I know that because I watched it on television.
Teacher: Correct. That’s three points. Well done! Now Team B, here’s your last question: Where did the first international tennis matches take place?

How trade began
For thousands of years, people produced most of what they needed themselves. They grew crops and hunted for food. However, they learned that they could have more goods if they traded with other countries. Groups of traders from Babylon travelled thousands of kilometers on camels in caravans. But because they had to carry food for themselves and their animals, there was little space for goods. For his reason, these traders carried small, valuable things like gold and diamonds.
During Roman times, trade became very important. The Romans traded with China and brought silk to Europe. Roman ships also brought tin from Britain, wheat from Africa and jewellery from the East. After the Romans, there was less trade, but in the twelfth century, it increased again. The Italian cities of Venice and Genoa became the world’s most important trade centres. From Venice, traders travelled to China, bringing back spices and silk. In the fourteenth century, Arab traders visited India and China.
In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, global trade increased. Great traders from Spain and Portugal opened many new sea routes. Later, European companies started exporting sugar, rice, potatoes and tobacco to Europe and jewellery.
In today’s global economy, it is easy to carry goods quickly and cheaply by air, road and railway. For more than a hundred years, world trade has been increasing and, as the world becomes a smaller place, trade between countries will continue to increase.

Voice: Interview one.
Interviewer: We are doing a survey to find out where people buy their food. Would
you mind answering a few questions?
Woman 1: OK.
Interviewer: Well, first of all, where do you buy most of your food?
Woman 1: At the supermarket.
Interviewer: What is the main reason for shopping at the supermarket?
Woman 1: It’s easier and quicker than going to lots of small shops. You can get
everything in one place.
Interviewer: Do you buy everything at the supermarket?
Woman 1: No, we buy our fruit and vegetables at the street market.
Interviewer: Why is that?
Woman 1: I think they are fresher and they taste better than supermarket fruit and
vegetables.
Interviewer: Thank you.
Voice: Interview two.
Interviewer: Good morning. I’m doing a food survey. Could I ask you some
questions?
Man: Certainly.
Interviewer: Thanks. Could you tell me where you buy most of your food?
Man: We buy different food in different places, but I’d say we buy most in the street
market.
Interviewer: Do you prefer the market to the supermarket?
Man: Yes, definitely. Supermarket prices are quite high and there is too much
choice.
Interviewer: Too much choice?
Man: Yes. If we go to the supermarket, it always takes us a long time to decide what
to buy. In the street market, there is less choice and most things are cheaper.
So we save money and we spend less time shopping.
Interviewer: Thank you. That’s very interesting.
Voice: Interview three
Interviewer: Good morning. We’re doing a survey to find out where people buy their
food. Would you mind answering a few questions?
Woman 2: No, that’s fine.
Interviewer: OK. Can I start by asking you where you get most of your food?
Woman 2: I sometimes go to the supermarket, but I buy most of my food for the
family from the grocer’s shop.
Interviewer: What’s you main reason for going to a grocer’s?
Woman 2: Well, it doesn’t have everything I want, but it’s very near to where I live and it has most of the food I need. Also, the shopkeeper is always very helpful and
friendly. I sometimes meet people I know at the grocer’s and we usually chat there.
Interviewer: Is there anything you can’t get at your local grocer’s?
Woman 2: I can’t find fish and fresh fruit there. So if I want those, I go to the
supermarket.
Interviewer: That’s very interesting. Thanks very much.

The history of ice cream
The Chinese invented ice cream in the fourth century BC, using only two ingredients: snow and fruit juice. Centuries later, the Italian explorer Marco Polo brought it back to Europe, where it was immediately popular. However, it was not until the 19th century that it was produced in large quantities by the American Jacob Fussell.
In the summer of 1922, Thomas Wall, who had been the owner of a food company for many years, decided that his factory in London would start to make ice cream. The public loved it and soon the factory was making 700 litres of ice cream a week. Thomas Wall had not been expecting his ice cream to be so popular. At first, the ice cream was sold only in shops, but then Thomas Wall had another good idea. He bought a lot of special bicycles and put boxes of ice cream on the front with an advertisement which said “Stop Me and Buy One”. Wall’s workers rode from street to street around London selling ice cream. By the late 1930s, there were 8,500 bicycles selling ice cream around Britain.
Ice cream is not only eaten where the weather is hot. People in cold countries love it, too. In 2002, people in northern Europe ate 14 litres each. It is surprising that the Italians, who are famous for their delicious ice cream, ate only nine litres each. However the people of New Zealand ate the most: 22 litres each, and the Chinese, who invented ice cream, ate only two litres!

Voice: Conversation one.
Grandmother: You look worried. What’s the problem?
Granddaughter: I’ve got exams at school tomorrow and I’m not very good at exams.
Grandmother: Have you revised all your subjects?
Granddaughter: Yes, of course, but it may not be enough. I don’t feel very confident.
Grandmother: Your mother was the same when she was a girl.
Granddaughter: What do you mean?
Grandmother: She wasn’t confident about exams.
Granddaughter: But did she pass her exams?
Grandmother: Yes – most of them.
Granddaughter: What did you tell her when she felt like this?
Grandmother: I persuaded her to work as hard as she could and just do her best.
Granddaughter: I’ve done my best.
Grandmother: Well, that’s fine. If you have done your best, no one can criticize you.
Voice: Conversation two.
Teacher: So why don’t you like the new student in the class?
Student: I don’t really know. He talks in a different way.
Teacher: Have you spoken to him yet?
Student: No, but I’ve heard him talking to other students.
Teacher: Are there any other problems?
Student: No, not really, but he wears unusual clothes.
Teacher What do you mean by ‘unusual’?
Student: Well, not the same as mine.
Teacher Is that a good a reason for not liking him?
Student: Not really, no.
Teacher Why don’t you offer to help him find his way around the school ? If you do
that, he’ll feel more comfortable, and maybe you’ll become friends.
Student: Yes, you’re right.
Voice: Conversation three.
Son: Dad, can I ask you a question?
Father: Of course. What is it?
Son: When did you decide what job you wanted to do ?
Father: When I was about eighteen years old, I think. Why do you ask ?
Son: Because I have no idea what I want to do yet.
Father: That’s OK. You’re only sixteen. When I was your age, there weren’t many
jobs to choose from.
Son: When do you think I should decide?
Father: Well, fortunately, you don’t need to decide until you choose your university
course.
Son: That’s in two years. I don’t want to choose something and then regret it later.
Father: Why don’t you chat to people you know about their jobs ? That may help you
to decide eventually. But don’t worry about it.

She
Horace Holly, a Cambridge University professor, agrees to help a younger man, Leo Vincey, find out more about Vincey’s ancestors. They discover some instructions written on an ancient pot which was left to Vincey when his father died. The instructions lead them to a remote part of the east coast of Africa.
After a long journey, they meet Ayesha, a beautiful and powerful woman who is loved by her people. But her people also fear her because they know she will punish anyone who dislikes or who disagrees with her.
Holly and Vincey discover something very strange about Ayesha: many years earlier, she walked through a special fire which stopped her from growing old. More than 2,000 years before, she became furious with her husband, Kallikrates, who then disappeared. She is now waiting for him to return.
As soon as she sees Leo Vincey, she believes he is Kallikrates who has come back to her. She tries to make Leo Vincey walk through the special fire so that he, too, will never grow old. When Vincey does not believe the story, Ayesha walks through the fire for a second time to show him what will happen. Suddenly, Ayesha changes and becomes her true age – over 2,000 years old.
