The Present Simple Tense




·
Main Usage:
habitual actions, general truths and descriptions.


·
Formation
: the infinitive form of the verb – an (s) is added with the third person
singular.




Words
used with the tense
: every – sometimes – often – always –
never – usually.


Examples




* Correct the verbs between brackets:


1-On Thursday we (go) to the cinema.


*On Thursday we go
to the cinema.


2-Idle people (lose) a lot of pleasure in
life.


*Idle people lose
a lot of pleasure in life.


3-You (not know) the correct answer.


*You don’t know
the correct answer.


4-He (have) breakfast at seven o’clock
everyday.


*He has
breakfast at seven o’clock everyday.


5-She (hate) playing cards.


*She hates
playing cards.


6-The postman usually (bring) the letters
twice a day.


*The postman usually
brings the letters twice a day.


7-She often (go) to work by bus and (come)
home on foot.


*She often goes
to work by bus and comes home on foot.


8-They always (meet) him at the club every
Friday.


*They always meet
him at the club every Friday.


9-She (teach) English well ? No, she (not
do).


*Does she teach
English well ? No, she doesn’t.


10-The baby always (cry) when it (be)

The Present Continuous
Tense




* Formation : (am / is / are) + (-ing) form
of the verb.


* Usage : An action that is continuing at
the moment of speaking.


An action in the near future.


* Words used with the tense : now - at this
moment – at present – etc.


N.B. – Certain verbs are not used in the continuous tenses. Here is a list of
them:


have, be (except in passive voice), see, hear, smell, taste, notice, recognize,
remember, recollect, forget, know, understand, fear, believe, feel (that),
think (that), want, wish, desire, refuse, forgive, hope, care, love, hate,
(dis)like, seem, appear, contain, consist of, possess, belong, own.


Examples




* Put in the correct Present Tense of the given verbs:


1-She (go) to school every day.


*She goes to
school every day.


2-We now (learn) English.


*We are learning
English now.


3-At the moment, I (sit) on a chair and (eat) a
banana.


*At the moment, I am
sitting
on a chair and eating a banana.


4-Bad students never (work) hard.


*Bad students never work
hard.


5-It (rain) in winter. It (rain) now.


*It rains in winter. It
is raining
now.


6-I (wake up) at seven and (have) breakfast at
half past.


*I wake up at
seven and have breakfast ant half past.


7-I (leave) for London tomorrow.


*I am leaving for
London tomorrow.


8-He (feel) a very sharp pain now.


*He feels a very
sharp pain now.


9-He generally (sing) in English but today he
(sing) in French.


*He generally sings
in English but today he is singing in French.

The Present Perfect Tense




* Formation :have / has + past participle form of the verb.


* Usage : - an action began in the past and continues up to now.


- showing interest in the present results of a past action.


- an action that has just finished.


·
Words used with the tense : just -
yet - already - ever - never - recently - lately - for - since –
up to now - so far.


N.B.I- SINCE means " from some definite point in the past till now "


FOR means " a length of time till now ".


N.B.2- The past simple can be used after SINCE with the main verb in the present
perfect.

* I haven't seen you since last Sunday.


2- She ( not speak ) to me for more than three
days.

* The policemen have already found the
thief.


4- She just ( go ) to the hairdresser's.


* She has just gone to the hairdresser's.


5- I ( not see ) him since he went to Paris.


* I haven't seen him since he went to
Paris.


6- My brother ( not have ) any good rest since
last week.


* My brother hasn't had any good rest
since last week.


7- You ever ( go ) to London ? Yes, I often ( go
) to London.


* Have you ever gone to London ? Yes, I
have often gone to London.


8- I ( wait ) you since four o'clock.


* I have waited you since four o'clock.


9 1 ( not visit ) my grandfather since 1971.


* I haven't visited my grandfather since 1971.


10- She ( be ) ill ( for - since ) a long time.


* She has been ill for a long
time.

The Past Simple Tense




* Formation : the second conjugation form
of the verb.


* Main usage : - actions happened and finished in the past.


- past habits with ( used to ).


- after ( wish - suppose ) to express unreal wish or
supposition.


*Words used with the tense : last - yesterday - ago - once - etc.

1- Everybody ( laugh ) at him when he ( sing )
yesterday.


* Everybody laughed when he sang
yesterday.


2- When you last ( see ) her ?

* He bought these lovely ties last year.


4- She ( arrive ) a month ago.


* She arrived a month ago.


5- He ( be ) very ill last week. He ( have ) a
heart attack.


* He was very ill last week. He had
a heart attack.

Yesterday morning, he ( say ) he ( will like ) to see me in the evening. I (
tell ) him I ( won't

* Yesterday morning, he said he would like to see me in the
evening. I told him I wouldn't be at home.

The Past Continuous Tense




* Formation : was / were + the (-ing) form of the verb.


* Usage : - an action which was going on during a certain time in
the past.


- indicating that an action was going on at a time when another action took
place.


*Words used with the tense : all (yesterday) - while - as - when -
etc.


N.B.1_ WHILE and AS are followed by past continuous and the main verb in the
past


simple.


WHEN is followed by past simple and the main verb in the past
continuous.



N.B.2_ Some verbs are not used in the continuous form.


Examples




* Put in the correct tense of the given verb:


1- I ( read ) a book when he came in.


* 1 was reading a book when he came in.


2- The sun ( shine ) when we ( go out ).


* The sun was shining when we went
out.



3- When you ( come in), I ( write ).


*
When you came in, 1 was writing.


4- I ( come in ) while he ( write ).


* I came in while he was writing.


5- It ( rain ) this morning when I ( get up ).


* It was raining this morning when I got
up.


6- He ( work ) all day yesterday.


* He was working all day yesterday.


7- When 1 ( arrive ) at his house, he still (
sleep ).


* When I arrived at his house, he was
still sleeping.


8- The boy ( jump off ) the tram while it ( move
).


* The boy .jumped off the tram while it
was moving.


9- The fire still ( burn ) at six o'clock this
morning.

The fire was still burning at six o'clock this morning.


10- He ( walk ) across the bridge when his hat (
blow off).


* He was walking across the bridge

The Past Perfect Tense




* Formation : had + past participle form of the verb.


* Usage : an action that was completed before another past action.


* Words used with the tense : after - before - when - etc.


N.B._ AFTER is followed by past perfect and the main verb in the past
simple.


_ BEFORE is followed by past simple and the main verb in the past perfect.

smoking room.


* When we had finished dinner, we went
into the smoking room.


4- I ( give ) my wife the present which I ( buy
) for her.


*I gave my wife the present which I
had bought
for her.


5- I already ( get ) home before it ( begin ) to
rain.


* I had already got home before it
began to rain.


6- This morning, I ( meet ) a friend that I (
not see ) for years.

This morning, I met a friend that I hadn't seen for years.


7- He ( tell ) me all about her after she (
leave ).


* He told me all about her after she
had left.



8- She ( thank ) me for what I ( do ) for her.

The Future Simple Tense




* Formation : ( will ) or ( shall ) + infinitive.


* Main usage : an action that will happen in the future.


* Words used with the tense : next - tomorrow - in the future - etc

* I shall be here tomorrow morning.


2- He ( not lend ) you any more money.

* We shall meet the manager next week.


5- Mr. Ashraf ( be ) an ambassador in six
months.


* Mr. Ashraf will be an ambassador in six
months.


6- She ( tell ) you all about it if you ask her.


* She will tell you all about it if you
ask her.


7- If you ( be ) in a hurry, I ( call ) a taxi.


* If you are in a hurry, I shall call
a taxi.


8- In the future, you ( find out ) the truth.


* In the future, you will find out the
truth.


9- When you ( take ) the final examination ?


* When will you take the final
examination ?


10- You ( not leave ) till you ( promise ) to
