The giraffe is the tallest of all animals. Its head is small and narrow, and the eyes are dark and soft giving it an expression of gentleness. Giraffes have excellent hearing and keen senses of smell and sight which help in sensing danger. One of its most remarkable characteristics is that it has no voice. The giraffe's hair is short and smooth, excellent leather can be made from it. This has caused it to be hunted to such extent that it is feared that giraffe will soon become extinct. Africa is the home of the giraffe. It leads a simple life, but it lives in constant danger from its enemy, the lion. They are timid animals and run from danger. If they are attacked, they protect themselves by kicking with their powerful feet. Giraffes travel in small herds, usually keeping close to water holes. It is amusing to watch a giraffe in the act of drinking or picking up something from the ground. To do this, it must spread its forelegs apart, which it does quite clumsily and is funny to watch.
