Listening and Reading

Voice: One.
Woman: It’s one of my grandchildren’s birthdays soon and I’m trying to
buy him a book of short stories. I’ve looked in all the bookshops in the
city but I can’t find what I’m looking for, so I’m going to try and buy the
book online. You can sometimes find really good bargains on the
internet and it’s so simple to pay. I normally use my credit card. I don’t
go shopping much these days. If you have broadband, it’s so quick and
easy to get things online.

Voice: Two.
Man 1: I sometimes surf the internet for fun, but I mainly use my computer
for sending e-mails. I have friends in different towns and cities, and I
also keep in touch with people in other countries. My best friend is
studying medicine in France – he’s very clever. He wants to be a heart
surgeon when he finishes his studies. I’m training to be an accountant.
When I start work, I’ll probably do most of my business online.

Voice: Three.
Boy: I mostly go online to listen to music. I don’t buy many CDs anymore – you can find everything you want on the internet. I’m also really keen
on sport so I often go online to find out the scores in international matches. This week, Germany beat Greece 3-1 in football.

Voice: Four.
Man 2: Well, I’m looking for a job abroad, so I’ve done some research on the internet. I’m a civil engineer and I’d like to work in another country
for a few years. I’m in contact with a Chinese company at the moment – I’d like to work for them. I’ll be head of a project building new buildings, bridges and things like that in other countries.

Louis Pasteur
He was a world-famous scientist, who was born in 1822 into an ordinary French family. When he first went to school, he was a very lazy student , but his life changed when a new and imaginative chemistry teacher arrived. From that time, he became very excited about the subject and he left school with good qualifications .
He studied in Paris and , in 1854, after doing research for a number of years, he became a professor of Chemistry at the University of Lille in northern France. Part of his work there was to help companies with their problems. For example , he showed a food company that they could kill germs in milk by boiling it and cooling it again. This made milk safe to drink.
After this, he showed that people could catch diseases from other people who were carrying germs. He also gave people an explanation as how germs can infect people. He described the three different ways: through the air , through our skin and in the food we eat.. Later, he discovered ways of preventing diseases from passing from person to person.

In 1888 , he started a special school for the study of diseases. The school took its name from his surname: it was called The Pasteur Institute.
Pasteur died in 1895 at the age of 72. Thanks to his discoveries , more people live healthy lives and fewer people die from common diseases.

Listening and Reading
Narrator: Conversation one.
Mr Stewart: We should decide where to go on holiday next summer.
Mrs Stewart: I know, I hope we haven’t left it too late. Any ideas?
Mr Stewart: We’ve always wanted to go to Egypt. Why don’t we go there?
Mrs Stewart: You’re right, but isn’t Egypt very hot? I’d prefer somewhere cooler.
Mr Stewart: It depends where and when you go. It’s usually cooler on the coast and
it’s probably better to go in the spring – April or May.
Mrs Stewart: But can you have time off work in the spring?

Mr Stewart: I can ask my manager next week. I’m sure it will be OK. Most of the
staff prefer to take their holidays in the summer.
Mrs Stewart: We could stay in Alexandria. People say it has a lovely climate. Shall
we try and find a package tour? They’re usually cheaper.
Mr Stewart: We could, but I’d rather book our own flight and hotel.
Mrs Stewart: OK, I don’t mind.
Mr Stewart: That’s good – we agree. We’ll have a week in Alexandria in May.
Narrator: Conversation two.
Mrs Ibrahim: I’d love to have a holiday in England.
Mr Ibrahim: So would I. It’s years since we’ve been to England.
Mrs Ibrahim: And the children have never been. They would love London.
Mr Ibrahim: I’ll have to check my work diary to see what the best time would be. I
think June or July is probably the best time.
Mrs Ibrahim: We’d have to wait until July – the children are still at school in June –
so we couldn’t go then. And the prices are higher in July because of
the increased demand.
Mr Ibrahim: That’s OK – we can afford to go for a week in July.
Mrs Ibrahim: Great – I’ll look on the internet and book a flight and a hotel. I can’t
wait. I’ll tell the children.

Are dinosaurs coming back ?
For many years, scientists have been trying to discover genetic information about the dinosaurs which lived on the earth millions of years ago. They believe that by using genetic engineering, they may be able to produce new dinosaurs.
One group of scientists were confident that this would be a possibility after a 68-million-year-old dinosaur skeleton was discovered. As it was being lifted from the ground, one of the bones broke and they found something soft inside that was not stone. This was a remarkable discovery for scientists, who had believed that every part of a dinosaur’s body would have turned to stone after such a long time.
Although this discovery meant that dinosaurs could be produced, as in Jurassic Park, scientists realised that the work would take too long to decide to look for other ways to bring back dinosaurs.
Their next idea was to look at birds. Paleontologists know that birds belong to the same genetic family as dinosaurs, so studying birds’ genes may be the best way to produce these ancient giants. A discovery in China showed that some dinosaurs had feathers like birds. More surprisingly, it has been discovered that in the egg, some baby birds have very small teeth and tails like dinosaurs.
Although scientists now believe that it is possible to wake the sleeping genes in birds and produce new dinosaurs, many people oppose the idea. They believe that dinosaurs, many people oppose the idea. They believe that dinosaurs should remain the subject of films and books on
