Chapter (1)

I. Answer the following questions:

1. What do we use the time- travel phone for?
We use a time- travel phone for traveling through time.
2. How can you use the time- travel phone?
First, put in the time which you want to visit. Then put in the place. Last of all you must type the password: Adventure, after that press the green button.
3. Where did Robert and Lucy go with the time- travel phones before?
They went to London in 1666 to see the Great Fire of London.
4. Where did the children go with their grandad? Why?
They went to the cinema to see a film.
5. What was the film about?
It was a bout The Romans. It was a story about the life in Ancient Rome in the year 130.
6. Describe the life in Ancient Rome as the children saw in the film.
There were rich people and poor people. There were lots of slaves were owned by the rich. The slaves had to work hard for their masters for no money.
7. What did they also watch in the film?
They watched chariot races at the Circus Maximus and there were gladiators fighting at the Colosseum.
8. What did the grandad shoe the children?
He showed them a very old book about the Romans. The cover was old and torn and some of the pages were loose.

9. What did Robert and Lucy decide to do? Why?
They decided to use the time – travel phones to travel back in time to the Ancient Rome.
10. Where did the children find themselves when they went to the Ancient Rome?
They found themselves in a room with a stone floor. There were large pots in the corners. A bed was near the window and the room was warm and sunny.

II. Comment on the following quotations:

1." I am taking you the cinema to see a film."
Grandad said that to Robert and Lucy when he took them to the cinema to watch a film about the Romans.
2."What was life really like for the Romans in those days?
Lucy said that to Robert and her grandad after they watched the film.
3."I wish I could find out more about the Romans."
Robert said that to Lucy and grandad after they watched the film about the Romans.
4."They look really scary."
Lucy said that to Robert and grandad after she saw the pictures of the Roman emperors.

Robert said that to Lucy when they wanted to travel back through time to Ancient Rome.

Lucy said that to Robert when they decided to use the time- travel phone to go back to Ancient Rome.

It was a hot and dusty city. There were people and animals everywhere. It was noisy and busy place.

They were rich people who met at the Senate House in Rome to talk about important things and make laws.
6. To whom did Magnus make the bust?
He made it for Senator Julius to give it to him at the party.
7. Where did Magnus and the children go after that?
They went to the bronzemiths' workshop to collect the bronze bust.
8. Why didn't Marcus tell her cousin Camilla about the truth of the children?
He didn't tell her because he didn't want to frighten her.

Stolen!

It was missing. It was stolen.

They suspected of one of the slaves especially, Salvius.

He told them that their slaves were honest and he couldn't believe that Salvius could such a thing.

They suspected him because he was acting strangely the next morning as he didn't smile and didn't wish them a good morning.
6. What did the cook ask Salvius to do?
He asked him to go to the market to buy some things for him.
7. Why did the children suspect Salvius after his conversation with the cook?
They suspected him because he insisted on going to the market as soon as he could.
8. What did the children decide to do?
They decided to follow Salvius.

He met Veximus.
10. Who was Veximus? He was a really bad man.

A message for Salvius

He wanted to take him to the baths to help him and to rub his back and wash him.

He seemed pleased that Magnus told him to go the baths with him and told him that would help you to forget the missing bust.

They thought that he might meet Veximus there.
4. What did the children decide to do to make sure that Salvius was guilty?
They decided to make a trap for him.

They decided to send him a message to tell him to meet Veximus at the pottery shop.

It was a spoken message because Salvius was like a lot of slaves who couldn't read.
7. Who told Salvius the message?
Robert told him the message.
8. How was Salvius when he heard the message?
He looked frightened and dropped the broom.

Robert said that to Salvius when he told him that Veximus was there and left him a message to meet him that night at the pottery shop.

Camilla said that to the children when Robert told Salvius the message and all they had to do was just to wait and see.

The meeting

They went to the pottery shop to follow Salvius.

They found lots of money.

He told them that he suspected Veximus of stealing the bust so he told him to take the money and give him the bust and at the baths he told his salve if he suspected his master.

He saved it to buy his freedom.

He suspected Titus Carolus because he admired the bust and touched it lots of times.

Robert to the children when they went to the pottery shop to follow Salvius and to make sure that he was the thief.

Marcus said that to Salvius at the pottery shop when they thought that Salvius was the thief.

Salvius said that to the children when they asked him a bout the money he had.
4."Let's think about the night of the party again."
Camilla said that to the children when they were sure that Salvius was innocent and that had to search for the real thief.

Camilla said that when they suspected Titus Carolus.

Mystery at the warehouse

They saw him walked towards the docks loading lots of olive oil pots onto a barge.

He told them that he would take the barge to the port of Ostia.

Robert said that to Salvius when they decided to follow Titus.
2."He's going towards the docks."
Marcus said that to the children when they followed Titus to the docks.

3."Why is he loading olive oil pots in the dark?"
Camilla said that to the children when they followed Titus and saw him loading olive oil pots in the dark.
4."It'snot strange at all."
Lucy said that to the children when she told them that Titus was hiding stolen goods so that he could take them out of the country and sell them overseas.
Chapter (7)
Trapped!
I. Answer the following questions:

1. Where did the children decide to go after that night?
They decided to go to Ostia.
2. Where was Ostia?
It was a long way from Rome. It stood at the mouth of River Tiber.
3. How was Ostia?
It was a busy, noisy place. It was a smelly place too! It smelt fish, olives, sweaty people and worst of all, it smelt of rotten fruit.
4. How did the children find Titus' ship?
They asked one of the porters and he told them about the ship.
5. What happened to the children in Titus' ship?
They searched for the bust but they couldn't find it, then they heard a noise, it was Titus and he locked the hatch. They were trapped into the ship.

II. Comment on the following quotations:

1."How will we know which ship is his?"
Camilla said that to the children when they were searching for Titus' ship in Ostia port.
2."What do we do if we find out that Titus is a thief?"
Lucy said that to the children when they went to Ostia to search for Titus' ship.
3."It's a very busy port."
Marcus said that to the children when they reached Ostia and found it a very busy and smelly port.
4."None of these ships can get up the river to Rome."
Marcus said that to the children when they found many ships in Ostia as they couldn't get up to the river to Rome because it was too shallow.
5."We must try and find Titus' ship."
Lucy said that to the children when they went to Ostia to search for Titus' ship.
6." Let's go on board and see what we can find."
Lucy said that to the children when they found Titus' ship in Ostia port.
7."I think it's the anchor."
Marcus said that to the children when they were on Titus' ship and heard the sound of the anchor.
8."We must get off the ship quickly."
Lucy said that to the children when they were on Titus' ship and they saw Titus then he locked the hatch and they were trapped.

Take him away!

After Titus locked the hatch, the ship began to roll in the water and the weather became so bad and there was a storm.

They smashed into each others and cracked open.

The batteries weren't working properly.

A battery gives the phone the power it needs to work and without it the time- travel phones wouldn't work at all.

When the children were on Titus' ship, they got wet and so did the phones and they lost their powers.
4. What did Magnus ask the children to do with the phones?
He asked them to put the phones on the hot stones so that the sun and the heat could dry the batteries out.
5. What happened to the phones after they put them on the hot stones?
They had a little power.
6. How did the children go back to their home?
They used the time- travel phones.

He told them that he was sorry for being late such a long time on the phone.
